Go shopping, learn a lot, make a friend!

On a shopping trip to Walmart one day, I ended up in Jason Stone’s checkout lane. It looked like any other lane, except that a full-out funfest was happening right in front of me. Three other customers and Jason were laughing and chatting like old friends. I couldn’t figure it out.

When it was my turn to check out, Jason greeted me warmly. Then he said this: “May I ask you the question of the day?”

It took me a while to process his words. “Uh, sure,” I said.

I can still remember his question: “What has been the best day of your life so far?”

It caught me off guard — in a good way. I asked him to repeat the question, and he did so with such a keen look of interest that I somehow felt obligated to review my entire life history.

“Let’s see,” I said. “It has to be my wedding day.” I paused to ponder. “Well, maybe it’s when my children were born. Can I have three answers?”

“Oh sure, go ahead,” he said. We both laughed as I tossed in a few more best days. He shared some of his too. Before long we were chatting away.

I’ve been back to Walmart many times since, and I now know that Jason always arrives at work with a new question of the day. He’s a good friend, and you know what else? He really gets me thinking.

If you’d like to meet Jason and experience his question of the day first hand, he works at the Walmart at 2700 Bethel Rd., Columbus, Ohio 43220. Tell him Tom sent you.

Many people who work at Walmart get such a negative image attached and it is very sad and so undeserved. I am impressed with Jason and his thoughtfulness and caring for others. What a great way to spend your day – inviting others to engage and interact in such a positive and fun way! Way to go Jason! I am inspired and look forward to sharing this story in my office and with my family and friends! Thanks Tom!

I couldn’t agree more, Janey. People who have a problem with “Walmart the big corporation” should separate that from the good folks who work there. These are hard-working people, and in own my trips to Walmart, I’ve always found them to be friendly and helpful.
